I notice a few more people are catching on such as Sola Sisters who have written well (as usual) on the subject.
The Sola Sisters lament that no one is speaking publicly, but perhaps they are speaking to Mahaney privately. I would just say privately isn't good enough. Pastors need to speak out publicly. It is not an option. Mahaney has sinned against a LARGE NUMBER of the Lord's flock. This is not a private issue.
And "kindly" and charitably isn't good enough either. This is an issue for strong, certain rebuke. But we have seen the need for strong and certain rebuke come and go before, with none forthcoming. So I won't hold my breath.
(they have a lot of good informational links there as well, please check it out)
That’s the best I personally can hope for, I don’t expect any who stuck their necks out and rebuked the complacent will get any apology from those who made accusations of being discernment divas, complaint blogs, etc... let alone any thanks from anyone but perhaps the victims for fighting to wake up the slumbering hirelings. I guess thanks from the movers and shakers was never my motivation though, so unfounded criticism from them isn't really a big deal for me either.
Still, the silence regarding Mahaney and SGM's refusal to bring criminal charges against sex criminals (making themselves criminally negligent with their misuse of 1 Cor 6) is deafening. WHERE ARE THE MEN?
They ought to be ashamed. But no, they've actually circled the wagons AROUND Mahaney and heaped insult upon injury to those who have been abused under their leadership. God help us. Useless hirelings, these men.
John Piper, who fawns equally over Rick Warren, is a stellar case of dubious discernment, if ever there was one:
John Piper's unqualified endorsement of CJ Mahaney Breaks Hearts
Will anyone rebuke John Piper THIS time, in no uncertain terms, for his (what is this... fourth, fifth? I've lost count) endorsement of a sinning/errant brother? Anybody? Anybody?
"He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep." --John 10:12-13
But Jesus says: "I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” John 10:14-18
My husband just mentioned to me (as if the Mahaney nonsense wasn't discouraging enough) that James Macdonald apparently has gambling problems, something I missed when it first came out. Not terribly surprising though.
Well, at least The Gospel Coalition seems to have quietly forced him out, which is more than anyone, including TCG, has done regarding the sex abuse occuring under Mahaney's leadership. I guess that must be because gambling and wasting money is more important an issue than child sex abuse in the church. Especially if the guy is really nice and personable and convincing, as John Piper said.
As a friend of mine quipped "The Roman Catholic Church has nothing on these evangelical popes." They all care for each other more than the sheep under their care. They DO however always seem to have time to write glowing recommendations of each other:
(To his credit, Macarthur HAS rebuked some of these guys, like Mark Driscoll)
We need the pansy pastors who can't see fit to rebuke this stuff, who have time to be in the public square and get public kudos but not time to be aware of what their peers are feeding the flock, or whether their peers are abusing the flock, to step aside and let real men lead. And from the looks of it, I would venture to say, almost, that women leaders would be a step UP. And no, I am not in favor of women pastors.
NO MORE SPIRITUAL GIRLY MEN!!! WHERE ARE THE LUTHERS?
[*Girly men (definition) would be those who think the worst thing to guard the flock against at the moment is "uncivil" talk, (Like Martin Luther) or 'strident women' who may call certain compromising pastors 'clowns,' and get the guard dogs out to fight the real wolves. You can't be eternally "nice" and "polite" and "kind" to everyone and be a real Christian leader. It will not work. Wolves do not listen to kind words. The sheep are sick of you watching while their young are snatched away because you couldn't see fit to raise the alarm.]
Yesterday I listened to Steve Lawson lauding the boldness of Martin Luther, telling us we need pastors with boldness and 'teeth' to protect the flock. Yes, well, that's all well and good, but will Mr Lawson actually DO what he laments needs doing? I see he has rebuked Joel Osteen, but that's easy. Rebuke Piper, Mahaney himself, Mark Driscoll, James Macdonald and his racist friends.
(*Voddie Baucham did rebuke that, THANK YOU for that, pastor Voddie!)
Seriously, PLEASE Mrs Mefferd, or ANY Christian media person conducting an interview, the next time you hear someone pining for more Luthers, then immediately ask that person who they last rebuked for their false teaching. And if it's someone easy like Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, or any of the other TBN jokers, that doesn't count. Ask them about John Piper, CJ Mahaney, James Macdonald, for starters. Ask them when they plan to go Luther on those guys. Then I'll believe that they actually believe we need more Luthers. But I think in reality, if we had a Luther, they'd be more interested in rebuking him than listening to him and certainly they wouldn't endorse a guy with such a sharp tongue. After all, that's worse than overlooking child sex abuse or gambling with church funds, or endorsing heretics like TD Jakes.
"Then the LORD said to me, “Take once more the equipment of a foolish shepherd. For behold, I am raising up in the land a shepherd who does not care for those being destroyed, or seek the young or heal the maimed or nourish the healthy, but devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs.So, you know, it is really hard for people who have fled this kind of abuse to trust leadership after that. And yet they are constantly being harped on to "join a church" "Submit to leadership" or else they'll be sinning. If you want to know why people are leaving the church in droves, maybe it's more about this kind of political shenanigan than hearing strident women bloggers complaining about this kind of political shenanigan.
“Woe to my worthless shepherd,
who deserts the flock!” Zech 11:15-17a
Go on up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good news;
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;
lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah,
“Behold your God!”
Behold, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms;
he will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young." Isaiah 40:9-11 ESV
