An old Ergun Michael Caner article about the Columbine Shootings

FIRST-PERSON: Walking a dry trail of tears, Columbine students shun spotlight

A friend of mine found this story he wrote in 2000, (and it is quite good) and shared it with me with these comments:

"Ergun Caner was pastoring a church in Colorado when Columbine happened. He was at the school on that day, trying to help. At that time he was E. Michael "Butch" Caner. I know he would love to add this Columbine story to his repertoire of moving stories, but he can't do that because how would he explain how he used to be Michael or Butch and now he's EAR-GOON GGGGNER? The more I think about the whole thing, the sadder it seems to me."

Hear hear.

Believe it or not, Ergun, the truth WILL set you free.

If only he'd shunned the spotlight like these students he herewith commends...so much might be different for him.

Here is another article about how he tried to share Jesus amid the chaos happening at Columbine at the time

Pastor shares Jesus in war-like scene amid students fleeing Columbine High

If this is what he did, this is commendable, and I agree, a far better story than some jinned up "I used to be a terrorist" stuff.

Ergun Caner Controversy Resurfaces

TV News Report in Dallas/Ft. Worth Exposes Caner - FBC Jax Parents, Don't be Fooled Again

He never has recanted/repented/admitted fault... so the story has followed him to his new place of employment.

How churches and Christian organizations can keep hiring these blatant fabricators (i.e. liars) is beyond me...

He's virulently anti-Reformed/Reformational in soteriology (hatefully so) and so besides a few Muslims pointing out his inconsistencies, some reformed people were the first Christian bunch to point out his lies.  It certainly appears that because they so hate the Reformational (i.e. Scriptural) understanding of salvation, they will not do anything to even admit that bunch could have been right.  Instead they demoted him while he kept publicly flaming his detractors for blowing this all out of proportion, twisting his words,  etc... and then after the controversy (supposedly) died down, Liberty apparently must have fired him in spite of the fact that they insist he 'never lied.' (Issuing many self contradictory, mutually exclusive statements, statements that do not correspond to the facts about himself doesn't equal lying, to them?)  Should this sort of political move be seen happening in Christian organizations, under Christian disciplinary processes?

A travesty, indeed.  This is doing a disservice to him and to themselves, more than anyone else.

"What seems to be at issue now is whether his detractors can find it ... to forgive."  Forgive?  That's just a silly statement.  No, what seems to be at issue now is whether he is ever going to admit he lied, and ASK for forgiveness, and demonstrate repentance.  And whether any Christian organization is going to care enough to not hire a public liar.

Jane Austen and Charles Dickens devotionals??

No, this is not a parody

NewJane Austen/Charles Dickens Devotionals Trailer

Now, we are classic literature (especially Jane Austen!) fans. We LOOOOVE Pride and Prejudice, the kids included (well, ok the youngest is still not much on board with this affinity).

But... we all thought this had to be a joke.

"The art of story can open doors and beckon us to the author of our faith... the one True Storyteller."

Is that what Jesus is?  The True Storyteller?  Excuse me while I LOL at the preposterous and trivial nature of that particular name for Jesus.  Is that name found in the Bible somewhere?

More evidence of the New Downgrade....

Ken Ham "Already Gone" Answers In Genesis presentation download free for a week

Ken Ham presentation "Already Gone" - free download for a week (not sure how many days left)

(UPDATE - there is also this one "Six Days - Don't call us Young Earth Creationists")

I listened to (watched) this yesterday with the kids and our eldest daughter's friend, who recently was saved out of a sort of semi-religious agnosticism, wherein he accepted the theory of evolution. WOW. FANTASTIC stuff.  I've seen Ken Ham's whole DVD series, but this was still a little like drinking from a fire hose... in a good way. He covers all the objections (both pro and con) to the willingness to compromise on the 6-24hr day young earth understanding... and he fits it all in a fairly short presentation.

Os Guinness calls for a New Christian Renaissance (?)

my comment:
Good grief, he's sounding more and more like Rick Warren. Sad.

How is this any different? Rick Warren said "I’m looking for a second reformation. The first reformation of the church 500 years ago was about beliefs. This one is going to be about behavior. The first one was about creeds. This one is going to be about deeds. It is not going to be about what does the church believe, but about what is the church doing." (http://www.beliefnet.com/faiths/Christianity/2005/10/Rick-Warrens-Second-Reformation.aspx?p=1).

So Os is calling for a moral revival, how is that any different from what the Left is calling for (their own morality of caring for the poor, social justice). It isn't going to work. We are fallen creatures and the only hope is the gospel. Os should be calling for the church to preach the gospel. I rarely hear it these days. It's assumed. The gospel assumed is the gospel denied. (Which is a A REALLY good article by Rev Herbert Mueller, LC-MS).

Also, note in the article what he says is good evidence of the renaissance that are growing up through the 'cement' -- The Wedgwood Circle, The International Justice movement, Socrates in the city???

Good grief.  And that's just the tip of the iceberg in this article.

And God Mocked them (excerpt audio from youtube)

I realize there are questions about Rob Morey's ethical behavior (or lack thereof) circulating around the internet.  I honestly don't know what to make of those.  I have enjoyed and benefitted from the teaching that I have heard from him.

However this is one of my favorite mp3's of his (only a short bit of it here in this clip).  I ordered the full version when it was still available for mp3 download. I wish they would offer that again.  But here it is on CD:

The entire presentation is 1hr 10 minutes

Here is a list of issues with Morey from someone who seems somewhat sympathetic to his teaching:

Just sounds like he doesn't seem to be a 'pastor' type... maybe he is another one of those who can teach, but not 'pastor' -- and he doesn't know it yet? I have no idea. Pure speculation on my part. But I have seen many of those sorts.

A W Pink on Sanctification (an encouragement and comfort for the struggling)

AW Pink The Doctrine of Sanctification (excerpt from last 7 pages)

Having presented an outline in our last chapter of the part which faith plays in sanctification, we shall now endeavour, under God, to offer consolation unto some of our sin-burdened, doubt-harassed, Satan-tormented brethren and sisters in Christ. "Comfort ye, comfort ye, My people, saith your God." (Isa. 40:1). And why? Because God’s children are the most deeply distressed people on the face of the earth! Though at times they experience a peace which passeth all understanding, revel in that love which passeth knowledge, and rejoice with joy unspeakable, yet for the most part their souls are much cast down, and fears, bondage, groans, constitute a large part of their experience. They may for a brief season be regaled by the wells and palm trees of Elim, but most of their lives are lived in the "great howling wilderness" (Deut. 32:10), so that they are often constrained to say, "Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest."

Sanctification - What sins do Christians NOT do?

This subject of sanctification and what lists of sins Christians "do" or "don't do" (respectable vs disrespectable sins) has come up an awful lot for me in discussion this week regarding several Christian friends who are struggling with the fallout of besetting sins in their lives, church discipline, etc. My heart aches for all those who struggle, because I have been there, done that, and probably will do so again at some point. In fact, at the point at which I think I'm not struggling, perhaps I'm in great danger. Lord have mercy!

One Mother's Journey (Spiritual abuse at Crossing Church in Elk River MN)

I was just made aware of this very sad story:

Chapter 18....Losing Curtis?

So what changed, what happened, what came into our home that caused so much destruction? A church, Matthew 7:15-20, a place I trusted my son would be safe, a place where I believed my son could and would glorify God, a place that should give hope and reflect joy, show love, seek peace, be kind and gentle, practice and teach self-control. This place I sent my child with blessing has become my biggest nightmare to date. As I look at my family today, I feel like saying this “church” destroyed my family but instead I will say that somehow in this nightmare, my heavenly Father will be glorified. I choose to believe that the darkness within those walls will be revealed. I choose to believe that His light will shine and show the evil that lurks there..Ephesians 5:13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them... That in my pain, in what I see as loss and destruction, through that my son will be rescued by the Rescuer and will someday use this as a mighty testimony to our Lord and Savior and His saving Grace.

My sons involvement at the Crossing Church in Elk River, Mn started around Easter 2010. He was invited by a friend to come play on the worship team, his friend that I trust and who I know loves my kid...

Chuck McAlister's 6 part article on transitioning the established church has moved

Had a bit of a time trying to locate this this series this morning as the URLs have changed.  Here is Chuck McAlister's series on transitioning the established church (to a Purpose Driven Model). I do not endorse this approach at all.  But provide it for educational purposes.  He refers to Dan Southerland's book Transitioning: Leading your church through change (sounds innocuous enough right?  It has a glowing foreword by Rick Warren).

Part 6 (links to the first five are on the page)

(UPDATE 1-27-2012 - the articles by McAlister have disappeared. I can't even find his name on
Pastors.com but according to this website he still does church transitioning consulting.)

Through our Church Encounter Ministry, we consult with and assist churches in understanding how they can engage and reach the unchurched of their community utilizing the various affinities that can be identified to attract the unchurched. A series of articles, written by Chuck McAlister, entitled How to Transition an Established Church, serve as the background information to guide the churches through the process of evaluating their ministries and structure to insure that optimum resources are focussed on reaching the unchurched. We also utilize the workbook, Gifted for Life’s Journey written by Chuck McAlister, to assist these churches in assimilating the new Christians they bring into their church.

UPDATE 4-1-2014 I found he has them posted on tumblr now and there are 10 parts. I don't know what all he has changed, if anything.

But he's also in the news for raffling off guns in church and I remember seeing his "Adventure Bound Outdoors" which I found rather tedious and contrived.  (And I am a hunter myself.)  *sigh* Some pastors never learn.

Another one from my friend

I bet she's churlish too...

I had no idea!

A friend of mine wrote to say he was banned from a certain board for displaying 'churlishness' of late.  They would not answer which particular posts were the problem.  *Sigh* What a tragedy.  So I did what I always do, I go to the Scriptures to find out what to do.  This is what I found... I mean, I can imagine how upsetting it is to be banned, although it hasn't happened to me, as far as I can remember.  But wow!  I had no idea it was so serious!  I missed these verses for so long.
LUKE 12:10, "And everyone that says a word against the Son of Man, that will be forgiven; But he that is churlish and/or sarcastic will not be forgiven and shall have their posting privileges revoked."

MARK 3:29, "Whoever has 'issues' will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of everlasting sin.  And shall no longer be able to point out the log in his brother's eye."

MATTHEW 12: 31-32 "Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but if you display an attitude problem shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak cynically or with sarcasm, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.  And shall no longer be able to try and stop his brother from swallowing a camel."
Now I know why people get so upset when there happen to be people out defending the truth by using the devices of sarcasm and wit.  Heaven help us, we're all going to hell!

Purpose Driven Craziness (Marusha Such Was I)

A good post from my friend Marusha:

I am so distraught and almost out of my mind over the fact that Rick Warren could actually deceive so many. Including John Piper and Tullian Tchividjian. Who else is under his spell? Rick is very methodical and ‘purposeful’ in his quest to worm his way into the reformed camp. He never passes up photo opportunities with well known theologians like Michael Horton. He knows exactly what he’s doing. He has a strategy and he is very gifted and charming.

Fluky Fridays are just that: fluky. I post whatever occurs to me that week. This week is purpose driven craziness.

Why bother with this? Many have told me that we shouldn’t point out heresy, that it divides. We should just love everyone and show grace. It is immature to have a discernment ministry. Why can’t we just leave everyone alone?

As nice as the above statements seem, to follow them would be unkind, dangerous and unbiblical.

Facebooker takes me to task privately after taking me to task publicly

He's much holier than me, see...
Brad Johnson June 1 at 2:17pm Report
I would like to share my response to you in private and give you an opportunity to repent, before I handle this publicly (i.e. on a FB post), as not to needlessly shame the body of Christ. I hope you will not flippantly reject these words, but take them in and pray them through. Rather than find a sliver or crack of error and focusing on that, listen to the totality and weight of what's being said...

I find it interesting that you admit Rick Warren is saved, and actually consider him a pastor/teacher (but a "poor" one, in your opinion), yet your continue to sow discord and negativity in the body of Christ (which RW is a part of, like it or not). Do you not know that God loves and uses poor teachers... in fact, that's all He uses! Where John Piper has sought unity and has come along side Rick Warren to encourage him in areas of concern, you have an obvious agenda to tear down... a brother. A saved brother!! This is not love, edifying, or good in any way. You have clearly become an agent of satan and not the Holy Spirit.

Screen caps from my friend

My friend made up a couple of demotivational posters from the Piper Warren interview that I think embody pretty closely what is going on.
